when i am very old © margaret griswold-scheiding
oh when i am very old
will you come visit me
will you brush my hair
will you hold my hand
and touch my face
and feed me kindly
dabbing my lips
with your kerchief
oh it will be a hard time
for you it will be so hard
as you watch me fail
descending into the void
all i knew and all i was
falling away the papery husks
of my personality
crumbling into nothing
oh when i am very old
i shall be grateful for
each kind word each gesture
though memories dissolve
and wink out like dying stars
i may not recognize your face
but deep within my spirit
a part of me will remember
